What this page gives you, and what it does not

You get a system-size range in kilowatts, a production range in kilowatt-hours a year, and an installed-cost range. You will not find a saving, a payback period or a return figure anywhere on this site, and that is deliberate: what solar is worth to a household depends on that household's rate plan, its usage through the day and its utility's net-metering rules, none of which a satellite photo contains. Anyone quoting you a payback from your address alone has guessed.

How the size range is worked out

The outline of your roof gives its footprint. A published share of that becomes installable array once the planes facing the wrong way, the fire-code paths along the ridge and eaves, and the vents and valleys are taken out. That area at current module density gives the kilowatt range.

Shade changes production, not size

Trees do not make a roof smaller. What they change is how much the same system makes in a year, which is why the shade question moves the kilowatt-hour range and leaves the kilowatt range alone.
